Today is a unique day, I had a full Girls Bedroom Reveal planned and yes your still getting most of it, but things took a turn so your also getting our update plans! Yes, she just had a room update around two years ago but she has had her bedroom furniture for over five years. When we moved into our current home we kept her bedroom furniture, even though we had a hard time making it work in our home.
When we updated her bedroom the first time we did away with all of her old bedding and started fresh. We really should have just bought new furniture then, but hindsight is 20/20 right? Over the weekend I finally got myself in gear and grabbed the fabric I had buried in the closet so I could start the curtains for her bed crown. (DIY Designer Curtain Post coming up next week!)
Once I finished the curtains Wayne and I moved the hutch/bookcase that goes above her dresser inside and tried it out, but it just didn’t look good so back to our storage shed it went. The longer I was in there moving things around the more I kept thinking this just isn’t working! The black french provincial style furniture she has now was perfect with her old toile bedding but it just doesn’t work well with the new colorful style we have now. So that got me thinking about what she really needs from this room and how she could better utilize it if we updated her furniture.
Some of you may be screaming at your computer right now “It look’s fine” and yes it does look fine but it doesn’t have the wow factor that I want and since we are updating our entire house to a more neutral palette black furniture will not work with the look we are trying to create throughout our home. Trust me I thought I would make the curtains and be done but it’s just not working for me and I know this space could be better. Here is the current state of her bedroom.
The fish you see pictured started out as this tiny little goldfish named Charlie that we somehow ended up with because someone else didn’t want to take care of him and now three years later he has literally taken over my life! And I mean that in the nicest way possible. He has grown so much that I have to clean his tank up twice a day to prevent debris, once in the morning and once at night before feeding time. He really needs a bigger space but I haven’t figured out a place for one yet so until then he stays put. Do you see how big he is? I had no idea Walmart Goldfish grew to be so big! I’ve read that they can live up to 20 years! You heard me, Twenty!
There is only one window in this room and the corner of the room gets zero sunlight so it’s pretty hard to shoot, so please forgive the darkness.
Both sets of curtains in this room were DIY projects. The first time I had a set of custom curtains quoted I almost fell out of my chair! They are quite the investment and I knew I would need to figure out how to make some of my own because no way the hubs would go for me dropping $500-$700 on curtains. They were actually very simple but that’s next week’s post. Here’s the mood board I created as an example of the changes I’d like to make in her room.
The first thing I want to do is update the bed with something upholstered and feminine. Something that makes it look more grown up than the current bed. That would also mean doing away with the bed crown and those amazing curtains I just made. 🙁 Maybe I can find a way to keep them but I’m not sure yet.
The second thing I would like to do is update the dresser with something white and short enough to fit under her tv that’s mounted on the wall. She currently has a desk under it and really never uses it at all so swapping those out won’t be an issue. I really think it will look amazing once we get this black gone. I plan to use the same bedding and I plan to include lots of gold accents and whites.
The third thing I would like to do is remove the chest of drawers and in its place, we would have room for a fun chair and ottoman since she reads and watches videos a lot that would give her a comfy place to sit. I’d also like to add a nightstand to give her some storage beside her bed.
I think changing just a few things would make all the difference in the world and really help how this room functions for her. It is so important when planning a child’s room that you stick with neutral pieces that can quickly be updated with just a few changes to the decor since they grow so fast and their taste changes so often. It will keep you from having to do a complete overhaul of the entire room. What are your thoughts about the new plans? Do you all think I’m insane yet?
